Sac and Fox Nation Statement About State of Oklahoma Enforcement Actions Relating to Tribal Motor Vehicle Tags

The Sac and Fox Nation’s leadership is receiving inquiries from tribal members about the ongoing actions by the State of Oklahoma relating to tribal motor vehicle tags. This week the Oklahoma Highway Patrol issued a ticket to the driver of a car bearing a tribal tag—a member of another tribe—for failure to pay state taxes. This has created a lot of concern among members of the Nation and other tribes across the state.

The legal right of the Oklahoma tribes to issue motor vehicle license tags was confirmed in a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court in 1993 issued in a case filed by the Sac and Fox Nation, Oklahoma Tax Commission v. Sac and Fox Nation. The Nation continues to issue license plates to qualified tribal members based on the guidelines the Supreme Court established in that decision.

If members of the Sac and Fox Nation receive tickets or encounter other problems with the state relating to their tribal motor vehicle tag, we would appreciate their contacting tribal leadership. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor this situation.
